Before we get into today’s shenanigans, by the time you read this myself, Sohmer, Will and Lar will be on various planes headed for the majestic land of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for the Edmonton Comic and Entertainment Expo! We’ll be at booth 1025 for the duration of the show and will have all the Gutters gab, gear and grumpiness you can handle. If you’re in the area, do stop by and say hello, won’t you?
Now, normally I’m not one to be phased by advertising. Advertising is everywhere and thus, for the most part I’m able to ignore it as it blends into so much white noise. But when Marvel started putting Daredevil (and Punisher, it seems) on energy drinks and making a picture of the bottle a Variant Cover? Yeah, that’s a bit much evern for me.
I mean, would it be so bad if it was one of those adverti-comics that feature a few panels of ol’ Hornhead doing something, then having a cold, refreshing, Street King Energy Drink? Make the advertisement evern the slightest bit entertaining or artistic and I’ll glad accept it. But the just throw a product shot on the cover of a book and call it a “custom edition” is laziness, the likes of which haven’t been seen… well, since the last blatant product placement.
Today’s advert comes to us from Richard Clark:
Born in a crossfire hurricane (actually Cleveland, OH), Richard P. Clark’s illustration career began in 1993 while still an undergraduate at The Columbus College of Art and Design. Since then, he’s worked for a wildly varied list of clients in several industries-among them HBO, Playboy, The Wall Street Journal and Alcoholics Anonymous. He’s been finding work again in the Comic Industry, including a recent job for Dark Horse providing finishes over Darick Robertson’s breakdowns for The Guild-Vork comic. He’s hoping this recent turn into the comic lane sticks as there are literally scores of stories he’d like to unleash on the world. Mr. Clark currently resides in Upstate NY after a 10-year tour of duty in Brooklyn with his wife, daughter and a goofy dog named Barnaby.
Enjoy the weekend, folks! See you in Edmonton!
