It seems like every other week there is a new show or webseries out there that promises to “tell it like it is” and show us what “life in the comic shop is really like!” From AMC’s Comic Book Men to the new webseries Geek Cred, each one of these shows works hard to show the world what those behind the counter go through on a daily basis.
And on each one of these series, I call copius amounts of bullshit.
You know what working in a comic store is really like? Exactly the same as every other job on the planet. There are some good days, there are some bad days, but at the end of the day, it’s a job. Sure, it’s a fun job and arguably, one that people get into because they love it, but it’s still a job. The idea that there is some special and crazy reality to working in comics is as laughable as the manufactured nature of Tattoo reality shows (an industry I also have a bit of experience with).
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to tell fun stories in a quirky setting, but all too often these “geek” shows end up simply being an over-glorification of fandom and it’s stereotypes that “follows the adventures of comic shop store clerks and their outrageous antics.” So much so that they’ve practically got their own formula and set of characters. There’s always the wildly over-the-top fan/employee, the hot counter girl and the somewhat “normal” manager or owner who’s got to keep things together in this wacky comedy adventure!
Like all “reality”- based shows, these series are full of made up events, fake interations and staged situations to make it all seem more interesting. Yes, I’m aware that a good number of these webseries are supposed to be fictionalized, with actors and sets and so on, but they almost always include a line somewhere in the intro or promotion that says they want people to believe this is what things are “really like.”
And what things are “really like” is delightfully routine and boring. Because that’s what keeps the doors open. It’s not wacky and craxy and sexy, but it’s true.
Today’s 100% true page comes to us from Christian Meesey:
Christian “Meesimo” Meesey is a mild mannered Caricature artist by day. But when night falls, he unleashes upon the world a slightly less mild mannered comic book artist, with more blogs than one human should have. He is a Leo, and enjoys Coen Brothers movies and the musical storytelling of Tom Waits.
Be good, friends! See you back here soon!
