Normally the “death” of someone in comics isn’t really a big deal. It’s one of those things that gets hyped up and polybagged and so on and so forth, but we know that eventually the person in question will most likely return.
However, as we’ve seen thusfar in the Ultimate universe, without them having to worry about retaining IP copyrights or anything like that, dead often does mean dead. In fact, in the case of one of the biggest names in Marvel, Peter Parker, not only has dead meant dead, but the replacement, Miles Morales, has brought us a whole new Spider-Man that’s just as fun and interesting as the one who came before him.
At the end of Cataclysm, we are left with an Ultimate Universe without Captain America. Now, some questions remain as to how certain his death is but going on the notion he’s gone for good, where does that leave the Ultimate U? They have replaced characters like this before, so it brings us to the $64,000 question: who will wield the shield next?
Ultimate Bucky is an old man in this universe and though I do remember a story a while back that featured one Scott Summers having a shield, but he too has fallen prey to the dead-means-dead edict of the Ultimate U. The story teased at the end of the book does feature a lot of ladies…
Maybe it’s time for an Ultimate American Dream?
