Ah, Kickstarter. The place where anyone, fan, pro or juggler can put their project up and bring it to the masses. I’m told that there are things other than comics being funded on Kickstarter, but that seems more like a crazy dream to me.
I think Kickstarter, Indigogo and other crowd-funding sites are valuable tools for self-publishers. I know that we have had some great success with the platform and it’s proven to be a great way to connect with the fans, as well as see how the market reacts to certain ideas. But, like any other method of funding, it has to be approached with a certain amount of business sense. It is one thing to be thankful for your fans and do whatever you can to show them how much you appreciate their support. That becomes doubly true when they actually start funding your projects though, in many cases sight unseen. That means they deserve even more gratitude and professionalism after backing your cause and excuses, creative spats and laziness become even less appropriate than they already are.
With that said though, I do enjoy surfing through the Kickstarter site and backing a project or two along the way. It’s been a mostly positive experience and here’s hoping that it stays that way.
Today’s page was assembled by our very own loveable Rus Wooton:
Rus Wooton is a comic creator best known for his lettering work on THE GUTTERS and books like THE WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE, BUTCHER BAKER and countless others from Marvel, Image, Dark Horse and Radical. An artist for as long as he can remember, Rus got degrees in Fine Arts and Art Education from the University of South Florida in 1996 and then went into freelancing, then working as Wizard’s web designer for three years, then to freelancing again. He’s been lettering since 2003 and draws and writes whenever he can. He is fueled by coffee, Dr Pepper, spicy Korean noodles and rock ‘n’ roll.
Hope the start of the week treats you well! See you back here Wednesday!
