There are a few genres of comics I’ve never really been into. It’s not that I don’t like them, they just aren’t my bag. One of these genres is what I call the “Barbarian” genre. Kull, Conan, Ka-Zar, Tarzan and yes, Red Sonja. Again, it’s not that I have anything agains these books, or the very talented creators behind them. I just don’t go for jungle cats and loin cloths.
However, toss in a writer like Gail Simone… suddenly my ears have perked up.
I’m definitely interested to see what Gail can bring to Red Sonja. Let’s be honest, the title’s sole selling point up until now had been a redhead in a bikini. Again, not that I have anything against that, it’s just not usually on my comics radar.
Hopefully Gail can do what she always does: Give a voice and character to a strong female lead and put her in interesting and compelling situations.
At the very least, the’ll have sold one more book and that’s always a good step, right?

Gibson Quarter is comic book artist best known for his illustration work on ëWar on Drugsí strips with writer Alan Grant in the European magazine WASTED. In North America, Gibson is a regular artist on the ‘Organ Grinder’ stories in UNDERTOW from 7th Wave Comics. He’s also drawn stories for Holmes Inc. (issue #1 and 2) and Undertow #1. He has also illustrated numerous other European magazines and comics: Northern Lightz, FutureQuake, Something Wicked, as well as Zarjaz and Dogbreath. Gibson lives in Toronto, and his biggest professional challenge is keeping his determined cat off the drawing board while he’s working!
