For me, Ed Brubaker saved Captain America.
I have always loved Cap, but lets be honest. Between Cap-Wolf, Liefeld-boobs, and the X-dominated 90’s things had not been great for the Sentinel of Liberty.
That all changed in 2005 when Brubaker and Epting turned Cap’s world into more of an espionage-themed sci-fi spy thriller. Their opening story, “Out of Time” not only revived Captain America but also made Bucky and Agent 13 cool. A herculean task, but one that was well accomplished. When you look at Captain America’s current place in the Marvel U as the leader he is, it’s hard to imagine that taking place without Brubaker at the helm.
However, I am not at all afraid of what’s coming next in the Marvel NOW-niverse either. First off, Romita Jr on Captain America? Yes, please. And Rick Remender? Might I point out a little book called Uncanny X-Force. A title that features big names like Wolverine and Deadpool on a team with lesser-knowns like Fantomex. That book had all the makings of something awful, but Remender quickly showed that it was a title to be watched, and I know I have had it on my list from the very beginning. In fact, it’s one of the few X-Books I’ve continued reading for more than a few issues.
So, will Marvel NOW as a whole be a success? That remains to be seen. All I can say is I’m pretty confident of Cap’s place in it and Rick should have nothing to worry about.
