I know a lot of people have been upset with the announcement that in Life With Archie #36, Archie Andrews will die. My immediate reaction was shock as well, having grown up on tales of Riverdale and the Good ol’ Gang. But, I’ve also been reading Life With Archie since it spun out of the Archie Marries… series and I have to say, this fits.
For those not in the know, the Life With Archie series was more Days of Our Lives than it was Little Rascals. It featured a grown up Archie cast, dealing with re-life, adult situations (not those adult situations, you pervs). Just to give you an idea, at one point in the book, Reggie is indicted on fraud charges, Veronica and Archie consider divorce and on the flip side Archie and Betty face financial ruin. The book isn’t a total downer, but you see what I’m getting at.
So, with the series ending, whats the one thing that’s never happened to Archie? Death. Plus, with the exception of the horror book Afterlife With Archie, when and where else could this kind of story every be explored? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to have to explain this news to kids who wouldn’t understand the whole “alternate universe” thing that comics loves to do, but at the same time, I’m pretty interested in what’s going to happen in the story.
Archie is dead. Long live Archie.
Today’s page survived it’s announced death thanks to Paul Salvi:
Paul Salvi is an attractive, successful artist. He lives in a nice part of Baltimore, contemplates suicide very infrequently, and strives every moment of his life to make himself better and better, to the best of his ability, that all may profit from it.
Have a great weekend, friends! See you back here on Tuesday!
