I can admit, as far as X-People go, Cyclops has always been a bit of a head-scratcher to me.
On paper, he seems like a really interesting character. His childhood was a mess, he’s suffered (arguably) more emotional pain a loss than most and as far as powers go, laser-eyes aren’t the worst. But time and time again, I find myself somewhat ambivalent towards him and the way he is used as a mopey, angsty-type guy who seems like he should really be writing in his journal a lot.
Cyclops is always the one that pops into my head when I start thinking “what’s so bad about being a mutant?” I mean, there’s cool jets, superpowers, girls everywhere and this is a cat who bagged Jean Grey and Emma Frost for MODOK’s Sake! What’s he got to be bummed about?
So, upon hearing that Greg Rucka was going to tell a story about All-New-Cyclops-From-The-Past and his father, Corsair (in space no less!) this spring, I thought “Aha! It’s daddy issues that are weighing him down! So now he’ll be able to work those out…um, in space?”
At least that’s what I assume, because I won’t be reading this book. Truthfully, the fastest way for me to put down an X-related title is to send the mutants to space. Now, if they did a shot-for-shot retelling of Field of Dreams starring Cyclops and Corsair… well, there would be a book for the ages AND they’d get to work their issues out.
Also, how f*cked up is the Summers Family Tree? Seriously, it must look like one of those cork boards with pictures and strings going every while way like they use on Criminal Minds.
Today’s page comes to us from family man Jeff McComsey:
Jeff McComsey is editor in chief of the historical zombie anthology and New York Times Best Seller FUBAR, now into its Third volume. He is also artist/writer of FUBAR’s first stand alone OGN MOTHER RUSSIA due out in the spring of 2014. Primarily Jeff spends his time illustrating funny books and anything else that comes within arm’s reach. When he’s not chained to his desk drawing pages, he’s chained to his desk… drawing pages.
Have a great week, my friends! See you back here Friday!
