As a personal choice, I don’t really wear a lot of comics-themed clothing. Given what I do for a living, it kinda feels like wearing the shirt of the band you came to see. That said, I do enjoy the wide line of New Era caps with comic designs, as well as a few of the Tokidoki X Marvel items that are out there. I prefer something of a more subtle approach to my geek-apparel designs.
This particular “controversy” reminds me a lot of the Marvel mini-series “Her-Oes” of a few years ago. The title was meant to be a play on female superheros, but some found it offensive because they associated the “Oes” part with sexual moaning and such. The fact that 1.) that’s obviously stupid and 2.) the series was set in a high school just seemed to make them madder.
In the case of these shirts, I have to say that I’m pretty sure the intentions on the designer’s part were innocent. I’m not saying that the shirts Marvel has come up with here couldn’t do with some revision, but at the same time, I’m pretty sure it’s not the end of the world.
I mean, it’s not like there’s an explicit oral sex scene on them or anything.
