While it may seem I’ve been going out of my way recently to find trouble, I can assure you that it’s trouble that finds me.
Indeed, it appears that I’m capping off 2011 with a nice little reprimand from Marvel over a Christmas card we sent over earlier this month.
Though we take shots at plenty of people over here, the truth of the matter has always been that “The Gutters” comes from a place of appreciation and respect. We love comics, we respect the people who make them and we thouroughly enjoy poking fun at them.
At the end of the year, we decided to send Christmas Cards and Gutters Books (and other swag) to every comic publisher, from small to huge. It was our way of saying thank you.
On the card itself was a parody of The Last Supper featuring comic characters. In the inside of the card, in addition to “Happy Holidays” was a cute little bit about “Thanks for continuing not to sue us.” The image was clearly parody, as defined by the laws of the US and Canada.
It appears the folks at Marvel were not amused and had their legal department send us a note. Consider me chastised.
Though not the response we were hoping for, it’s proving to be a constant amusement around the office and has taught us all the valuable lesson of not sending Christmas Cards ever again.
At the end of the day, no hard feelings. Marvel and I remain best of friends.
